27th Senate District’s "Woman of the Year"

(Long Beach)- Senator Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), has named Dr. Elisa Nicholas, director of the Children’s Clinic in Long Beach, as his 2007 "Woman of the Year" recipient. Dr. Nicholas, who also serves as Chief of Staff at Miller’s Children’s Hospital, has devoted her career to caring and advocating for underserved children and families.

In naming Dr. Nicholas for the honor, Senator Lowenthal highlighted her tenure as the Project Director for the Long Beach Alliance for Children with Asthma.

"I have known Elisa for several years and have marveled at her dedication to children with asthma. Her energy and focus to serving the most vulnerable in our community are unparalleled and I am proud to name her as my Woman of the Year," Lowenthal said in making the announcement.

In addition to her role as Director of LBACA, Dr Nicholas is an appointed member of the Los Angeles County Children’s Planning Council and member of LA Care Health Plan’s Children’s Health Consultant Advisory Committee.

"Dr. Nicholas has proven to be a powerful ally in the ongoing air quality debate. She simply does not take no for an answer when it comes to children’s health. I look forward to continuing a strong partnership as we take on the fight for cleaner air in our region," said Lowenthal.

Dr Nicholas is a graduate of the UCLA School of Medicine and received a Masters of Science in Public Health also from UCLA. Prior to taking the helm at the Children’s Clinic, she worked in Africa on a child survival project and at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in their child abuse center.
