Martha Cota |
Martha
Cota has been an active community member Long Beach for 12
years. She has volunteered with numerous organizations on
various issues of education and environmental health
impacts. After being trained she became a
participant of the Long Beach Alliance for Children with
Asthma (LBACA) since she and two of her children have
asthma. Martha realized the importance of informing her
community about asthma and the health complications air
pollution. She further became involved with LBACA by joining
the Neighborhood Assessment Team (A-team). For Martha the
traffic counting activities were the most fun. As part of the A-team, Martha would like to visit
each school in Long Beach and let them know about our
efforts to better our environment and the opportunity to
become involved in policy changes.

Oty
Nungaray |
|
Oty
has been involved in the community for more than eight years
through Community Leadership and the Community Partner’s
Council (CPC). While working at the Children’s Clinic she
heard about LBACA and began attending coalition meetings.
She was interested in participating since she has a daughter
who has asthma. After participating int LBACA events, she
became part of the A-team. The most fun activity Oty has
done as part of this team was counting traffic and
particulate matter monitoring. She especially enjoyed the p-trak
(particulate tracking) trainings taken place at local
schools. It was
a great feeling to have all the a-team members there. As
part of this team, Oty would like to have the voices of
low-income community members be heard by elected officials,
agencies and anyone else who has the power to create and
implement solutions.
