General Meetings:
In our monthly Health & Housing
meetings, community members are given the opportunity to be
educated on various topics related to LBACA’s policy efforts
in both outdoor air pollution and housing policy work. These
meetings also provide them with needed time to understand
the complexity of many of these issues, draft their personal
stories into testimony and prepare for upcoming hearings,
forums, council meetings, and other events.
To date through the Health &
Housing meetings, community members have been trained in
basic asthma education, the research on outdoor air
pollution and its health impacts, fair housing rules,
affordable housing advocacy opportunities and many other
issues.

Health Leadership Training Spring 2007:
The
Community Partners Council (CPC), The City of Long
Beach Department of Health and Human Services and LBACA
collaborated in creating a Health Leadership Training for
community members. The goals of the program are:
-
To give community members
the opportunity to learn skills to be health leaders in
their own neighborhoods.
-
Teach participants how to
use these skills to improve the health of their families
and communities.
-
Empower community members to
be health advocates.
-
Create a group of community
members who want to continue to be involved past the
Health Leadership Program.
-
Provide the participants
with the opportunity to work with different
organizations in the community on various health topics.

Oty (a-team member) recruiting at general CPC meeting interested community members to join LBACA's a-team. Oty and Laura (a-team members) presenting monitoring data collected at local schools in Long Beach and general overview of the health effects of air pollution at a monthly Health and Housing group meeting. As part of the health leadership training, community members particpate in a diversity and conflict resolution session. As part of the health leadership training community members participate in a conflict resolution and diversity exercise.
