Traffic Counting
Traffic counting is used in
combination
with the p-trak in monitoring pollution hot spots in Long
Beach. Pollution hotspots are identified by a-team members
going out to the community and mapping these areas. These
locations are designated for traffic counting and p-trak
monitoring data collection which has been the focus for the
a-team's work. Traffic counting allows individuals to see the overall
impact local traffic is having on their community. A-team
members focus on counting semi-trucks and other diesel
emitting vehicles. In selecting an area to do traffic
counting, a-team members ask a few questions before
selecting a target area such as: Approximately how many
diesel trucks travel down the street during a given time? How close is the street to any homes, parks, schools,
community center? Has there ever been any traffic data
collected in this area? Are there any major warehouses,
ports, rail-yards, industrial zones and how do they impact
the traffic in your area? Is is safe to conduct traffic
counting in this location?
Particulate Matter Monitoring (P-Trak)
The p-trak
is a device which measures ultra fine particles markers for traffic exhaust. These particles travel
through the air people breathe. The
smaller the particles are, the further they travel into the
respiratory system and the bloodstream and our body's
organs. Particles
are measured by the p-trak in particles per cubic centimeter. Although
this device does not measure total particulate matter or
other pollutants it is highly useful in monitoring a hotspot
area. A-team members use the p-trak along with traffic
counting to monitor different areas in Long Beach that are
highly impacted by pollution, such as near freeways, rail yards and major
road arteries. Today, LBACA's A-team has focused its
monitoring on locations near schools.
